Pip the porcupine scampered along the brook. Her tiny paws pattered on the soft forest floor. Her eyes sparkled at the sight of colorful pebbles.
“Ooh, pretty!” Pip squeaked. She scooped up a smooth stone. Plunk! It landed in her little pouch.
The stream gurgled a happy tune. Pip hopped from rock to rock. She giggled as cool water splashed her toes. One by one, she gathered more pebbles.
“I wonder how many I can find?” Pip thought. Her quills quivered with excitement. She continued her merry hunt by the stream.
Pip trotted along the stream, her pouch jingling with pebbles. Suddenly, she heard a worried voice.
“Oh dear, oh dear!” It was Brook the beaver.
“What’s wrong?” Pip asked, her nose twitching.
Brook sighed. “I need to build a dam, but I can’t count my sticks!”
Just then, Moss the rabbit hopped over. “I can’t count my carrots either!”
Pip’s eyes lit up. “I can help! Let’s use my pebbles to count.”
First, they counted Brook’s sticks. Pip placed one pebble for each stick.
“One, two, three, four, five!” they counted together.
Next, they counted Moss’s carrots. Again, Pip used her pebbles.
“One, two, three, four, five!” They giggled as they counted.
Brook clapped his tail. “Wow! Now I know I have five sticks!”
Moss wiggled her nose happily. “And I have five carrots!”
Pip beamed with pride. She had helped her friends with her pebbles!
“Let’s count something else!” Pip suggested excitedly.
They found pine cones, flowers, and shiny rocks. Each time, they used Pip’s pebbles to count to five.
By the stream, the three friends laughed and learned. Counting was fun with the Pebble Pals!
The sun began to set, painting the sky orange. Pip, Brook, and Moss sat by the stream, smiling.
“Thank you, Pip!” Brook said. “Now I can build my dam.”
Moss nodded. “And I can sort my carrots. Counting is fun!”
Pip’s heart felt warm and fuzzy. She had made new friends and helped them learn.
“Let’s meet here again tomorrow,” Pip suggested.
“Yes!” her friends cheered. “We’ll be Pebble Pals forever!”
As Brook and Moss left, Pip looked at her pebbles. She counted them one last time.
“One, two, three, four, five,” she whispered.
The stream gurgled softly. Pip yawned and curled up nearby. She dreamed of more counting adventures with her new pals.
